College of Digital Communications

Digital Communications is both beautiful and practical. We are inspired by and constrained by nature. The school is about learning to
communicate and design, write and produce in a way that people find useful, inspiring and practical.
Good production and explicit design are at the core of good communication. Whether it’s an airport information system, a brochure,
catalogue, interactive CD, or music video, what you design determines how effective the message is. In order to achieve this, you need to
understand design principles, the tools of the trade, and how to creatively combine these elements for effective communication.

The School of Design teaches the student to recognize and implement relevant design. The first 6 weeks of the school is a broader learning
phase where you learn the history, principles and styles of graphic design as a whole. The second half is more focused and relates
specifically to design techniques and principles related to print, screen and motion. As these are the three main areas of graphic design, we
want to create a broad base of knowledge for students to build on.

This is an entry-level school introducing the individual to the world of design and communication. The course focuses on understanding the
history and working principles of creating good design. An introduction in the following areas will be offered: elements of godly
communication; advertising and design; layout, color, form and function; designing for print and screen; media strategies. The school will
assist each student in recognizing and creating good design for a wide range of media applications. The student will be exposed to the
design industry, how they may best function within it, and how their design skills can be used in fulltime missions.

professional video production. The school provides intensive training in topics such as camera, sound, lighting, picture composition,
computerized editing, script writing, etc. Students write, shoot, and edit their own projects so they will be able to effectively use this medium
in a wide range of situations. Experienced professionals lecture and supervise hands-on exercises. Emphasis is placed on excellence,
relevance, and effective communication, as well as the challenges for committed Christians working to use this media with integrity.

Digital Filmmaking is an intensive course designed to train and equip filmmakers. Training is given in multiple areas of the filmmaking
process such as directing, producing, screen writing, non linear editing, digital effects and stunt work. Training is accomplished by lectures
given by working professionals in the film industry. Every week there are multiple opportunities for practical application of the week’s topic.
Over the course of the school, students will break up into director/producer teams and produce a short film as well as crew other short film
projects. This is to emphasize the importance of effective team work under challenging situations. Teams will also be formed and crews
assembled for the final project. Team work is one of the most vital roles needed in the film industry today.

Another objective of the course is to emphasize integrity and character development. This coupled with prayer on behalf of the film industry,
are as relevant and necessary as the creative process. The School of Digital Filmmaking will give filmmakers the tools and foundations
needed to pursue a career in this digital medium.

The school equips students spiritually and professionally to effectively produce films that target mainstream audiences with significant
stories. Students gain a perspective of the film industry in the digital age, including an overall understanding of the creation, production and
distribution process in the independent and mainstream markets. After this three-month school students will be able to direct and produce
short films and move with confidence towards a career and ministry in the film industry. Topics covered include: directing, producing,
screenwriting, camera operation, lighting, sound, editing, working with actors, and other technical aspects of filmmaking. Character
development of the future filmmaker is also an integral part of the course.

Storytelling & Digital Photography; This course emphasizes the call to “tell a story” that highlights an issue, illustrates a truth or stirs the
heart with appreciation for the beauty of God’s creation. Students are encouraged to see the world differently and to engage with ways of
using the powerful and relevant medium of photography to communicate to the world. Students develop their God-given talents through
gaining theoretical understanding as well as practical photographic experience. The curriculum also lays a solid foundation of
communication skills so that on completion of this course the student will not only be technically competent as a photographer, but will also
be a skilled communicator who shares his or her faith with a broken world.

Photography;  The goal of both the School is to inspire and train Christians to use photography as a communications tool for the Kingdom of
God.  That may be through business or more traditional missions. These schools may be unique in teaching photography from a Christian
perspective: not just what we do, not just technique, but how our knowing Christ should make a difference.

We seek students who have a passionate, burning desire to go beyond a self-centered, "personal enrichment" or hobby level, who want to
use their camera to serve others. The course is very concentrated 12-week course, so students must be highly motivated and teachable.

There are two levels of photography school available. They are all digital. The School of Photography I, including color and black+white, is the
first level. Successful completion of the P I is required for the P II.
Photography I:
• provides individualized attention with class size limited to 16 students. The teaching is tailored to the level of experience and knowledge of
each student.
• emphasizes the "hands-on" approach, with a balance of classroom sessions and shooting assignments from Christian professional
photographers.
• approaches photography from a Biblical perspective, emphasizing Christian character in how the students use their cameras and photos,
to reflect Christ's values in both how and what is photographed.
• continues the discipling process by building relationships.
Equipment:
Students supply their own camera equipment: a digital single-lens reflex
(DSLR) with one or more interchangeable lenses to cover from wideangle to
telephoto.  They will also need an external flash with bounce and swivel,
polarizing filter for each lens, digital cards (at least 8 GB total
space), rechargeable batteries and charger for camera and flash (NiMH).

Photography II
This course builds on the highly concentrated foundation of the School of Photography I toward serving others cross-culturally through
photography, especially during the month long fieldtrip overseas. Building on photojournalism and studio skills from the SOP I, students delve
into editing, design for publishing their own books, as well as adding sound and motion to still photos for Web and DVD use. Development of a
personal style and portfolio is furthered.

Digital Communication
Purpose
virtually every form of communication has been revolutionized by recent advances in digital technology and the goal of this school is to teach
students how to use these technologies effectively for the Kingdom of God. In the past, Christians were among the last to apply new
technologies. The SDC seeks to reverse that pattern, helping our students to become leaders in the communication field.

Digital Technology
Digital communication is the marriage of new computer capabilities with the traditional creative expressions of photography, video and
design. By digitalizing (saving as computer files) formerly static images, one can create new visual elements, add motion, and make their
work interactive. Digital technology can help teachers do better classroom presentations, help evangelists be more innovative in
communication, and help Christians in all forms of ministry to serve more effectively.
Course Content
This course exposes students to all major areas of digital communication - publishing, graphics & illustration, photo-editing, digital video,
multimedia CD-ROM and Internet. Students will learn how to use industry standard software programs, to do webpage design and interactive
video, and how to integrate Kingdom values into the communication process.

While the School of Design (Phase 1) provides the principles behind good design, the School of Digital Communications (Phase 2) gives you
training in how to use the latest and greatest tools to take what is in your imagination and make it a reality. You don't have to do the School of
Design first, you could always do it later, but we usually encourage people to do both. That way you can know the secrets to good design and
then go on to learn the tools needed to create amazing work.

The school covers Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, Final Cut, After Effects or Motion graphics, Presentations and so
much more. Each week focuses on learning the tool, but even more importantly you get to create amazing projects each week too. The
software is important but we also focus on who God is in the midst of the learning, and you will be amazed by what you can achieve in just
three months! No previous training is necessary, whether you are a photo-editing guru or just interested in knowing how to shoot a video or
design your newsletter.
This school trains students in numerous software programs relating to the following major categories of digital communication: print (digital
photo editing and graphic art and illustration),
3-D graphics, motion and video graphics, digital video and web design. Students work individually or with a team on a multi-media project as
an integrating final assignment. By the end of the course, the student has a basic working knowledge of the main programs used today in
this aspect of the communication industry, as well as a better knowledge of design. Emphases vary according to location where the course
is offered.

School of Acting for the Screen; Acting for the Screen runs alongside the School of Digital Filmmaking. Both curriculums are intertwined to
generate creative synergy in a community of filmmakers. In this environment, actors and directors team up to tell stories that are relevant
and appealing to today's audience.

The course is looking for people who not only want to become excellent actors but want to affect the film industry with ethical principles --
actors who will be noticed for their talent and by their character. A successful actor or filmmaker can bring a powerful message to millions
worldwide. Through theaters, DVDs and television, films are crossing language or cultural barriers to reach more people than ever before.

We believe the School of Acting for the Screen will equip you to get you started in becoming a successful actor and having a significant
influence in this important sphere of society.

We focus the curriculum of the school towards developing your creativity to master the craft of acting. We'll watch tons of films, we'll
analyze them, discuss them and find out how the principles explained in the classroom are applied in successful films. There is also strong
emphasis on character development because in this industry your character will be tested in areas such as pride, greed, sex, love for
money, dishonesty, disloyalty and cutthroat competition, just to name a few.

Guided by the staff and experienced professional guest speakers, the school provides intensive training in the following topics:

Introduction to the craft of acting -- From Stanislavski's System and Suzuki's Method to Meisner's Approach, students will fully explore the
most effective ways an actor can "live" truthfully under imaginary circumstances.
Visual story telling -- Understanding camera angles, lenses, lighting, and its influence in the performance.
Screen writing -- Understanding how scripts are created and how characters are structured within a film script, scene study, script analysis.
Breaking down scripts, scene preparation, creating your role.
Working with the film director -- discontinuous shooting, set work ethics, script readings and rehearsals.
Auditioning -- preparing the actors for the audition environment by giving a realistic idea of what is required in an audition.
Film history and analysis -- Giving the student a broader base of knowledge about the rich history of the cinema and providing the tools to
analyze influential film performances and apply what you learn from them to your own craft.
Actors trained in the School of Acting for the Screen have an opportunity to have leading and supporting roles in the short films produced in
the School of Digital Filmmaking and therefore having an immediate practical application of all what is learned in class, including the final
projects that are shot on 16 mm film. Therefore you will walk out of the school with several short films in your demo reel.
Students are introduced to the craft of screen acting from a biblical perspective, studying techniques from Stanislavsky’s System and
Strasberg’s Method to Meisner’s Approach. This school runs alongside the School of Digital Filmmaking, allowing students to regularly
practice their newly acquired skills in short films. The school provides a wide understanding of the film and television industry, including the
personal struggles and challenges encountered in that context.

Advanced Principles of Communication
In a world undergoing rapid change, we want to equip Christians to represent God well on current issues. What is a biblical response to aid
and poverty, to genetic engineering, to the definition of what is marriage? APC will help train you in critical thinking skills through a grid of
biblical values. We aim to teach students how to think, not what to think, but to have opinions based on the breadth of scripture that can give
hope to people grappling with Christian faith in the 21st century.

If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful
thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.
C. S. Lewis

A course of study to encourage Christians to become multidimensional thinkers, learning to perceive, process and express a variety of
points of view on contemporary, personal and social issues from a biblical perspective. This purpose is supported by investigating areas of
interpersonal and public communication, group/team dynamics, persuasion and/or argumentation and mass/cross-cultural communication
as they relate to significant issues of the times. This challenging course requires the students to work at a mature level of self-motivation,
initiative, and emotional stability.

School of 3D Communication; Students in this course will learn the 3D modeling of objects, creating textures, and how to animate and
combine them in movie clips and games. They will learn how to create 3D websites for the internet. This course will equip Christians to
influence the film and computer game industries, and to make godly values visible through 3D animations. Besides learning specific tools
and techniques, emphasis is placed on the student’s relationship with God, and its effect on design and the creative process.

School of Marketing and Research; A school to lay the foundations of biblically based communication management principles and
methodology. Students develop a strategy of marketing and research from a Christian perspective. Study and application of proven research
and marketing techniques enables the students to apply a broad range of communication disciplines effectively. They will be equipped to
accomplish their communication goals with success, and become redemptive agents of change within their area of influence. It not only
addresses the market place, but also shows the strength of this redeemed discipline to help strategic planning for evangelism, planting
responsive churches, and assisting in the growth of established congregations and ministries.
